The Fruits of Earth - Part 8

We were allowed to rest for an hour or so and then the servants came to wake us up and brought us to the parlor. Here, a lady supervisor welcomes us warmly and explains the house rules.
“You will call me Madam,” she starts.
“Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at nine in the morning, twelve in the afternoon, respectively six in the evening.”
I can’t believe my ears: three meals a day!
“After breakfast you have communal lessons and in the afternoon you study alone, each in her own room. In the evenings we have a formal congregation and then the curfew is at ten o’clock sharp,” Madam continues.
“You are to take scented baths every day and then undergo a cosmetic regimen meant to improve on your natural beauty. The fruit-servants are here to help, so ask them for everything,” Madam explains, as we listen to her in awe.
Fruit-servants? So, this is how they’re called.
“You will participate in social events and you will learn to behave in these situations. In the end, you will be fully prepared to take your rightful place into the society,” concludes Madam.
